World Diabetes Day 2024
November 14 is the annual commemoration of World Diabetes Day, an initiative launched in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to address growing concerns about the health threats posed by diabetes. The day commemorates the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, discovered insulin in 1922 – a treatment that has saved the lives of countless people with diabetes. Since 2006, the day has been officially recognized as United Nations Diabetes Day, and Diebetes and well-being is the theme for World Diabetes Day 2024-26, highlighting the importance of prevention and encouraging lifestyle changes to manage and prevent diabetes.
According to the World Health Organization, diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease that is prevalent worldwide, with an estimated 220 million people living with the disease. If left uncontrolled, this number is expected to more than double by 2030. Notably, nearly 80% of diabetes-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. In China, the prevalence of diabetes in adults is 11.2%, mainly type 2 diabetes, and the prevalence in people over 60 years old exceeds 20%.
Diabetes management involves a multifaceted approach, and dietary management and lifestyle adjustments are the cornerstones of treatment. Dietary control is not only about lowering blood sugar levels, but also about maintaining optimal blood pressure, cholesterol levels, weight, and preventing complications such as diabetic nephropathy and coronary heart disease. Unbalanced diets, such as extreme calorie restriction leading to malnutrition or ketogenic diets, may have adverse effects on lipid levels and should be treated with caution and under professional guidance.
Oxygen therapy may have certain benefits for people with diabetes. For example, it improves tissue hypoxia, enhances immunity, and relieves fatigue. Diabetic patients should consult a doctor before considering oxygen therapy. The doctor will determine whether oxygen therapy is suitable and determine the appropriate oxygen therapy plan based on the patient's specific condition and physical condition.
