International Self-Care Day is a global health memorial day. Dr. Guo Zhenyu, the first Chinese chairman of the World Self-Medication Industry Association (WSMI), proposed to designate July 24th of each year as International Self-Care Day (ISD).
Based on the health care concept of "not treating existing diseases but preventing them" in traditional Chinese medicine, it advocates that people around the world pay attention to self-care and the health of themselves and their families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With the development of society, economy, culture and the progress of medical science, the average life expectancy of human beings continues to increase. At the same time, the proportion of deaths from chronic non-communicable diseases in the world's total deaths has reached 63%. The long treatment cycle and high cost of chronic diseases have brought an increasingly obvious heavy burden to the public medical security systems of various countries, and have become a livelihood issue of common concern to the world.
It is increasingly urgent to promote a project that can effectively improve the level of self-health management of the people, reduce medical expenses and reduce government expenditures on medical and health care in the current social environment. Today, people have realized the important impact of self-care behavior on people's health. The World Health Organization points out that among the factors that affect human health and longevity, heredity accounts for 15%, society accounts for 10%, medical care accounts for 8%, climate accounts for 7%, and lifestyle accounts for 60%.
Therefore, in 2010, Dr. Guo Zhenyu proposed to the World Self-Medication Industry Association (WSMI) to designate July 24th of each year as "International Self-Health Day". Based on the health care concept of "preventive treatment" of traditional Chinese medicine, it advocates that people around the world improve their lifestyle and health through self-care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; this initiative has been actively supported and responded by member associations of WSMI countries, and the "International Self-Health Day" was officially launched globally in 2012.
